Starship Combat

May 6, 2007

In Thousand Suns, there are not hit points in the traditional sense. Instead, there are three types of wounds: nonlethal, lethal, and mortal (in ascending severity). Starship combat mirrors this, but I’m having trouble coming up with an appropriate word for one of the three levels of damage to vehicles. The lowest level is electronic, since it represents the on-board systems that keep a vehicle running. Reduce electronic to zero and a vehicle ceases to function, just in the same way that reducing nonlethal to zero knocks out a character. The highest level for a vehicle is structural and represents raw, physical damage to the vehicle’s make-up. Exceed its structural rating and the vehicle is simply destroyed.

So, what’s the middle level of “wounds” for a vehicle? If a character takes more damage than his lethal wound rating, he falls unconscious but in a way that takes far longer to heal than nonlethal damage. It’s not death but it’s a pretty significant matter nonetheless. What would correspond to this on a vehicle? Systems? Something else?

Thanks in advance.
